Training and Capacity Building
Overview
The HIA Unit offers a range of training programs tailored to the individual organisation's needs, from two-hour introductory sessions to semester-long or one-week intensive programs. Programs have been offered through organisations such as the Victorian Department of Human Services and NSW Health, and directly to individuals through the short course program offered by Deakin University. Please contact us to discuss your training needs. The usual modes of delivery are outlined below.
Four-day Short Course As part of the Deakin University short course program, a four-day training program in Health and Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is offered annually. The course allows students to gain an understanding of the history, contexts, processes and outcomes of health and social impact assessments. It is highly interactive and focuses on the needs of students in their workplace. Students review and evaluate impact assessment projects which have been completed and plan an actual or hypothetical HIA/SIA as a way of clarifying issues. Australian and overseas cases studies are presented to illustrate the theoretical perspectives of HIA.
Master of Public Health/Master of Health Science (Health Promotion) This elective unit (Code HSH 709) is offered on the Burwood campus of Deakin University as an intensive one week unit of study for students enrolled in the MPH or MHP programs. Assessment includes a critique of HIA processes including a presentation and an individual assignment. Content is consistent with the knowledge and skills required of professional health and policy makers in public health and health promotion including the areas listed in the short course description as well as examination of the role and nature of evidence and detailed exploration of mapping and impact appraisal techniques.
