Deakin
University’s field education program is an important component of the
Bachelor of Social Work degree. Within a host agency, students can play
meaningful roles in a variety of activities including planning programs and
events, undertaking needs assessments, developing evaluation tools, counselling,
group work, completing literature reviews and producing promotional material.
Placements provide students with learning experiences that enable them
to develop and integrate knowledge in the practice setting.
Student Pay
As a host agency, you do not need to pay for work undertaken whilst the student
is on placement.
Insurance Coverage
Deakin University has public liability insurance that covers students while
they are on placement.
Supervisor Support
Supervisors from your organisation who take part in the field education program
will receive a set of guidelines outlining the aims and objectives for placements.
Supervisor training and professional development seminars are provided each year through Deakin University.
Student Selection
The University allocates the most appropriate student to the agency for an initial
pre-placement interview. As a host agency you can take this selection process a step further
by interviewing the students and making sure the student has
the attributes necessary to work well within your team.
Flexible Placement Dates
Our program allows for flexibility to better meet your needs. Field education
placements occur between March to June and July to October.
Police Checks
Students obtain police checks prior to placement.
Length of Placements
Students are required to undertake a minimum of 490 hours during placement
which is equivalent to 70 days.
