Welcome to the School of Nursing and Midwifery
The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University is one of the largest schools of nursing in Australia and is based across three of the University's four campuses: Melbourne Campus at Burwood , Geelong Waterfront Campus and Warrnambool Campus.
The School is committed to providing excellent courses that reflect current trends and evidence-based practice in nursing and midwifery using an experiential approach to the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Undergraduate courses include the Bachelor of Nursing and three unique combined degree courses: Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion, and Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology). The School collaborates closely with health services to conduct a number of postgraduate work-based speciality courses that are nested with the Master of Nursing Practice course. These speciality areas are critical care, cardiac care, intensive care, emergency care, perioperative nursing, and midwifery. The Master of Nursing Practice (Nurse Practitioner) and higher degree by research programs including PhD complete the course offerings.
The school also houses the Faculty Professional Development Unit. This Unit provides educational learning packages by distance learning, which underpin nursing and health professional practice and provide a step-by-step approach to gaining a postgraduate qualification.
The building of our research profile is a priority and the School has many formal and informal links with hospitals and other agencies in both research and consultancy activities. Exciting developments over recent years have seen the establishment of partnership arrangements and the appointment of clinical chairs with major healthcare providers. These include The Alfred Hospital, Barwon Health, Cabrini Health, Eastern Health, Epworth Hospital, Northern Health, Southern Health and Uniting Care Community Options. The School’s strong research performance was rewarded by a rating of ‘4’ in the recent ERA exercise conducted by the Federal government. The rating of 4 indicates ‘world class’ research outcomes. In addition the School is home to one of the universities strategic research centres the Centre for Quality and Patient safety.
I invite you to explore the School's many courses and other student opportunities in research training and professional development on our web site.
