Background The partnership between Box Hill Hospital and Deakin University School of Nursing was established in June 1999. This collaboration has resulted in a rich research environment, and reflective practice that occurs through the interchange between the academic and clinical practice setting. The partnership offers opportunities for clinicians and students to acquire additional research skills that also contribute to the broader research objectives at Box Hill Hospital. Long-term outcomes will lead to a consolidation of evidence-based practice and excellence in nursing. The Director of Nursing, Box Hill Hospital, Ms Andrea McCance is committed to the development of Nursing Scholarship and the promotion of Evidence Based Practice.
Dr. Linda Worrall-Carter is the Senior Research Fellow at Box Hill, a role she commenced in late 2001. She is based in the Box Hill Hospital Centre for Education and Research, and works with a research team including a research fellow and a number of students.
Aim A central aim of the partnership is to develop a research program at Box Hill Hospital that integrates clinical practice and teaching with nursing scholarship.
Current Research Projects Current research activities are in the areas of cardiovascular disease:
- Heart Failure — Heart failure management programs and Cognition in Heart failure
- Women and heart disease — Women and cardiovascular Disease, Cardiac Rehabilitation
- Chronic Illness (linked with the Centre for Chronic Illness at Deakin University)
Collaborative Research Projects The Nursing Research Centre at Box Hill and the Centre for Chronic Disease at Deakin University have collaborative projects in progress with the following co-investigators.

- Patients adherence to sodium in their diet
- Experiences of women post Myocardial Infarction
- Quality of life and depression in women post Acute Coronary Syndromes
- Cognitive abilities in patients with heart failure
- Assessment of Heart failure management services in Australia
- BENCH study - Benchmarking HF programs- NH&MRC scholarship awarded 2003.
- Cognitive function and self-management ability in patients with chronic heart failure.
- Optimising patient outcomes through a risk management approach to Intensive Care Unit discharge
Student supervision Dr Linda Worrall-Carter also offers research support to students completing their Honours and Higher degrees. In 2002 a joint Deakin/ BHH scholarship was established in order to support students during their Honours year. There are a number of Honours and PhD students conducting cardiovascular research at Box Hill Hospital. At the end of 2003 one PhD student (Andrea Driscoll) was awarded the prestigious NH&MRC scholarship for her research on Benchmarking Heart Failure Programs nationally and developing clinical practice nursing guidelines (2004-7).
