Molecular Medicine and Nutrition

Speciality areas:

The Molecular Medicine and Nutrition cluster aims to understand the molecular basis of common disease states, how nutrients influence disease states, and to apply this information to the development of therapeutics and functional foods.  The focus is on a range of chronic diseases that collectively impair the quality of life for billions of people all over the world, including diabetes, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and healthy ageing.  Research spans basic gene discovery and analysis through to the development and testing of new therapeutics, including functional foods and alternative medicines that will make a positive impact on disease outcomes in obesity and diabetes, and cancer, and on gut health and healthy ageing.  Facilities include the Metabolic Research Unit in Geelong and molecular nutrition laboratories at Burwood.  The cluster has had strong support from both the pharmaceutical industry (including Chemgenix), and the food Industry.
