Career development

Deakin as a contemporary and modern University aims to provide opportunities for professional growth, leadership, staff development, promotion and career advancement for staff.

Career development is an integral part of the Performance Planning and Review (PPR) process. The PPR process provides an opportunity for discussion and agreement on actions relating to professional development opportunities and career planning for staff.  Development Action Plans capture a summary of these discussions and are reviewed through the annual PPR cycle.

The following illustration sets out examples of career development activity by selecting from the Staff Development Program offerings available centrally at Deakin.

We encourage you to prepare a career development plan with your supervisor as part of the PPR process. There are responsibilities for both parties:

Staff member

  • Development of work related skills and knowledge.
  • Actively make your career development needs and objectives known.
  • Research possible career paths.

Supervisor

  • Provide appropriate support to staff in identifying work requirements and associated skills, knowledge and abilities in order to facilitate career development.
