Professional Leadership Development Programs

As part of the People, Culture and Change focus of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan (5 MB) the University is committed to ensuring professional staff are recognised for their expertise and are provided with the opportunity to achieve the highest level of professional standards. To support this commitment, the University is providing opportunities for professional growth, development and career planning for professional staff in, or aspiring to, leadership and management roles within the University.

The People, Culture and Change Professional Leadership Development Programs focus on three core areas:

  • Leadership qualities: Making a difference through our people
  • Strategic focus: Shaping Organisational Culture
  • Management skills: Operational Excellence

An individuals' potential and their ability to participate in the programs will be identified through the Performance Planning and Review (PPR) process and included in faculty and divisional staff management plans (workforce plans) where succession needs have been identified.

These programs will provide a learning environment that promotes the development of the identified capabilities and behaviours at levels of depth and sophistication directly relevant to the individual needs of the target cohort.

2011/2012 Program

A leadership program is currently being rolled out to senior administrative staff in each School (School Executive Officers). The program, which commenced in September 2011 and will finish in May 2012, comprises four core dimensions: 

  1. Vision  - Working on Deakin-wide organisational dilemmas as they filter to their own School. 
  2. Engagement  - Building a connected community to achieve the highest levels of support for the academic endeavours of the University.
  3. Credibility - Leading their teams to face the implications of changing conditions in the tertiary sector, and the subsequent challenges they face and tough calls they have to make.
  4. Vitality -  Maintaining energy and enjoying their role as leader.
