Become a research student

Welcome to the HDR section of the School's website. Here you can learn about applying for, and completing, a research dissertation.

A research degree is the highest possible qualification that a university can offer, and as such the work of our HDR students is valued highly in the School. Staff in the School aim to inculcate a range of research, analytical and communicative skills in HDR candidates. Enrolling in a research degree offers you a valuable opportunity to publish and present your work to a broader academic community, and to assist you enter your chosen profession.

This year the School has launched an HDR seminar program on a regular basis so that candidates can hear about the approaches of others, and can present their work in progress to their peers and academic staff. As part of the seminar series, candidates will make one public presentation per year of full-time study. Provisions will be made for candidates who reside some distance from Melbourne or Geelong, but in principle it is expected that the HDR cohort will be actively engaged in the seminar series.

The seminars are designed to encourage comment which will be helpful in progress toward completion of your thesis. Seminars will take the form of a Statement of Intent (for candidates in the initial stages of their research), Work-in-Progress (for those at the mid-point) or Research Findings (for those in the final stages). Candidates who have already submitted their theses will be exempt from seminars.

Please contact the Associate Head of School (Research), Associate Professor Andrew Scott, if you have any queries about the HDR program.

I will take this opportunity to send my very best wishes to everyone in SHSS (though I will be floating around doing research assistant work ). I have enjoyed my PhD experience more than I can say. My supervision has been of the highest standard, the facilities have been excellent and I have always had help when I've asked for it. The staff have all been lovely to me throughout.

I really could not have asked for anything more: I am one very grateful student!
