IT planning requires an understanding of various trends that have the potential to impact the services of the University. The Architecture and Planning Unit within DeS regularly consults within the University and performs market research to identify trends that may influence IT planning. These include technical trends such as developments in end-user interfaces, business-related trends such as new government regulations or changes in curriculum delivery, and societal trends that have the potential to influence the business services of Deakin.
Trends are analysed and mapped onto the trend radar, which provides a quick view of the type of trend (communities, administration, research, teaching and learning), an approximation of when the trend will impact the University, and what the nature of the trend is (e.g. technology, business, social, threat, opportunity, event, etc.). Accompanying the trend radar is a document that briefly describes each trend and the potential impact on the University.
The trend radar is used as a basis for discussion during IT planning consultation sessions within the University.
