International Day of People with Disability

Join Deakin in celebrating a day that promotes inclusion and access for people who experience disability.

Deakin’s contribution

Our disability support services are designed to promote inclusion and access. They assist both students and staff in being able to fully thrive when studying or working at Deakin.

Deakin's Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2021–2025 guides our approach to disability across the University, aiming to better the student and staff experience. If disability, health or mental health affects your participation at university we're here to support you – just ask!

Disability Resource Centre

Our Disability Resource Centre (DRC) promotes inclusion and access for students who experience disability and those with primary carer responsibilities. Together with a Disability Liaison Officer (DLO), you'll work with the DRC to identify and seek any adjustments, services and recommendations that will assist the University in meeting your study needs.

Inclusive Education (Inclusive Curriculum and Capacity Building)

Inclusive Education provides information for academic and professional staff who are involved in teaching and supporting students, or who are involved in curriculum and capacity building.

Changing Places

All Deakin campuses include Changing Places. Changing Places provide suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. These public toilets include an adult-sized change table, ceiling hoist, peninsular toilet, privacy screen and additional circulation space to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities and their carers.

Accessing adjustments

An adjustment is a measure implemented to assist students and staff with disability to participate in study or work. Adjustments are available for members of the university who require an individual adjustment. Any disclosure of disability or health condition will be treated confidentially in accordance with Deakin's Privacy Policy.

Deakin Library inclusive spaces

Deakin Library provides inclusive spaces, services and resources that are accessible to people with diverse needs. Assistive technology is available to book at all campus libraries and quiet study rooms are available to book.

What is International Day of People with Disability?

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3 December each year. It is a United Nations day observed internationally, and aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

IDPwD provides an opportunity for us to make positive changes to the lives of the 4.4 million Australians who experience disability by promoting inclusion and access in all parts of life.

Access for all: our award-winning initiatives to improve digital content

Several Deakin staff were honoured for their commitment and efforts to improve the University’s digital accessibility at the Accessibility in Action Awards. Hosted by the Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET), the awards recognise staff from across the Australian tertiary education sector for their work in making education more inclusive.

Geelong Cats Sensory Zone

We’ve worked with our partners at the Geelong Football Club to create a Sensory Zone for home games at GMHBA Stadium. The zone makes the footy more inclusive for all fans, especially those with a sensory disability.

The zone includes a quiet space and multi-sensory room featuring sensory bags, weighted lap mats, headphones, glasses, fidget toys and other activities that engage different senses.
