Biography summary

Dr Tan’s principal professional interests are in corrosion science and engineering and their applications for enhancing the reliability and durability of civil and industrial infrastructures, in particular underground oil&gas pipelines, hydrogen fuel systems and offshore infrastructures. His work spanned the range from fundamental study on issues such as electrochemical heterogeneity and corrosion science, applied research on issues such as corrosion testing and monitoring, localised corrosion measurement and prediction, corrosion inhibition, anti-corrosion coatings and cathodic protection, to industry contracted research on issues such as coating performance assessment, pitting and weldment corrosion of desalination plants. More specifically, Dr Tan has actively engaged with the Australia’s energy pipelines, future fuels and offshore infrastructure industries, and served as a Program Leader for the Energy Pipelines Cooperative Research Centre (EPCRC) in its “Extension of Safe Operating Life of New and Existing Energy Pipelines” research program. He has led more than 30 research projects over the past decade to address critical engineering issues that affect the reliability and durability of underground pipelines and offshore oil & gas infrastructures. These include major research projects for the EPCRC (14 projects), the Future Fuels CRC (FFCRC, 6 projects), National Centre of Excellence in desalination Australia (NCED, 1 project), National Energy Resources Australia through its National Decommissioning Research Initiative (NDRI, 1 project), Australian Research Council (ARC, 2 projects), as well as various short-term industry projects (approximately 20 projects). He has led the establishment of the National Facility for Pipeline Coating Assessment (NFPCA), which has won a CRC innovation award and acquired NATA accreditation. The NFPCA is currently the only one of its type in Australia and plays a vital role in increasing security of energy pipelines and infrastructures. Outcomes and benefits from these research projects have included the review and subsequent revision of the Australian Cathodic Protection Standard AS2832.1 criterion for cathodic protection of pipelines subject to stray current; a revision of AS4853 of the test voltage applied to pipeline coating; the development of a real time remote monitoring system of pipeline corrosion rates; a greater understanding of the corrosion mechanism under disbonded shielding coatings.

Dr Tan has received NACE Fellow honour ‘in recognition of distinguished contributions in the field of corrosion and its prevention’. He is an author of over 200 referred publications including some 33 papers in Corrosion Science journal todate. His original contribution to electrochemical methods for corrosion testing and monitoring have been highlighted in an invited research book (Y.J. Tan, 2013, Heterogeneous Electrode Processes and Localized Corrosion, John Wiley & Sons Inc., USA, 246pp). Dr Tan’s research output is often also in the form of confidential research reports to industry (some 200 industry reports todate). He is also the Asia Pacific Editor for the Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology (previously known as the British Corrosion Journal since 1965). He has also served as the Chair of the Technical Committee, Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) Conference 2019 - the largest Corrosion Conference and Exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere. He also contributed consistently to ACA technical committees and has received a Best Review Paper Award and an AMAC award from the Organisation.

Dr Tan has developed and taught educational and training courses including ‘Materials Performance and Durability’, ‘Corrosion Engineering’, 'Applied Chemistry', ‘Corrosion Chemistry’ and ‘Flowline Corrosion’ during his varioous academic appointments.

Career highlights

Dr Tan has received NACE Fellow honour ‘in recognition of distinguished contributions in the field of corrosion and its prevention’, specifically the Fellowship recognises his work developing a technology which can detect localised corrosion – which can occur in and on pipelines (for the development of an electrochemically integrated multielectrode array, namely the wire beam electrode method).

Dr Tan has over 25 years of research, teaching and industry engagement experiences in the field of applied electrochemistry and corrosion technologies. His substantial contribution to electrochemical methods for corrosion testing and monitoring has been reviewed/highlighted in an invited research book (Y.J. Tan, 2013, Heterogeneous Electrode Processes and Localized Corrosion, John Wiley & Sons Inc., USA, 246pp).

Dr Tan has successfully coordinated/taught undergraduate courses including ‘Corrosion Engineering’ and 'Applied Chemistry', and also postgraduate courses including ‘Corrosion Chemistry’ and ‘Flowline Corrosion’. Dr Tan's teaching and research are associated with the Deakin Corrosion Engineering laboratories at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds campus.
