Electron Microscope Facility

Housed in the Geelong Technology Precinct at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, the Institute for Frontier Materials’ Electron Microscope Facility supports a wide range of research projects that lead and inspire innovations in materials science and engineering.

Inspiring innovation

Researchers use the facility to develop and apply advanced materials in the sectors of manufacturing technology, energy efficiency, resource and infrastructure sustainability, including diverse fields such as metallurgy, textiles, biology and composites.

The Deakin Electron Microscope Facility services research interests throughout Deakin University. Facility staff are responsible for:

  • developing, operating and maintaining instrumentation and capabilities 
  • training and/or collaborating with users on specific instruments.

Staff members provide an advanced level of expertise in the particular type of characterisation technique being utilised.

Opened in September 2012 as Stage One of the federally funded Australian Future Fibres and Innovation Centre (AFFRIC) project, the electron microscope facility contains six purpose-built laboratories, featuring a comprehensive collection of instruments used in the characterisation of materials.

Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology
The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology is one of 80 research institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science. Research is conducted by molecular biologists, biochemists, medical doctors and physicists from 25 nations, working together to elucidate the regulation of cell growth, the interaction of proteins and nucleotides and the complex intracellular networks of signal transduction.

The Central Electron Microscopy Facility, housed at the Carnegie Mellon main campus, provides state-of-the-art instrumentation, techniques and expertise for advanced electron beam microcharacterisation of materials at high spatial resolution.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory
The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) User Facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is one of three electron beam microcharacterisation centres supported by the Scientific User Facilities Division of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy. The CNMS User Facility provides access to a suite of advanced instruments.
