Kelly Miller - School of Life and Environmental Sciences
SQA201 Society and Environment is a wholly online unit. It is a core unit for all students enrolled in the four Bachelor of Environmental Science courses at Deakin and approximately 170 students enrol in the unit each year.
In this unit, most of the material is delivered through DSO, eLive tutorials and CD-ROM. The DSO material includes study outlines, electronic readings, assessment task resources and discussion forums. The CD-ROM includes video clips and interviews about current environmental issues.
To welcome students to the unit, a 'Welcome to this unit' folder is included on DSO. This folder contains a photograph of the unit chair with a short explanation of the unit content and overview of how they should start their studies.
The folder also contains the unit guide, which contains more detailed information about the unit timetable, assessment tasks, due dates, and so on.
The unit is structured around four learning modules, the first one being an 'Introduction to unit'. As students start navigating their way around this module (which is to be completed in the first week of the trimester), they can also access an eLive recording welcoming them to the unit and explaining where to start.
