Install and enable Java

Quick guide for Mac users

You will need to have Java (Java Sun JRE 1.5 or higher) installed for certain areas of DSO to function properly through a browser. Java can be downloaded from the Deakin University Software site or installed from the 'Software Essentials 09' DVD, or, if staff are on a Phoenixed machine via the Phoenix Software Catalogue .

Note: On a Mac OSX system the embedded Java is 1.3.1. Please do not remove this Java version as the OSX system requires this version of Java to function and operate effectively. Safari recognises and enables both Java 1.3.1 and the recommended and supported Java 1.5 for DSO.

Enable Java in Safari

1. Click on Safari and select Preferences.

2. Click on the Security tab.

3. Under Web Content, ensure that Enable plug-ins and Enable JavaScript are ticked.

4. Close the window.

5. Quit/exit Safari after you change settings and then re-start the application.

Enable Java in Mozilla Firefox

1. Click on Mozilla Firefox and select Preferences.

2. Click on the Content tab.

3. Ensure that Enable Java is ticked.

4. Close the window.

5. Quit/exit Mozilla Firefox after you change settings and then re-start the application.
