Install and enable Java
Quick guide for PC users
You will need to have Java (Java Sun JRE 1.5 or higher) installed for certain areas of DSO to function properly through a browser. Java can be downloaded from the Deakin University Software site or installed from the Deakin Learning Toolkit DVD, or, if staff are on a Phoenixed machine, via the Phoenix Software Catalogue.
Enable Java in Mozilla Firefox
- Click on Tools and select Options.
- Click on the Content tab and ensure that Enable Java is ticked.
- Click OK.
- Quit/exit Mozilla Firefox after you change settings and then re-start the application.
Enable Java in Internet Explorer
- Click on Tools and select Internet Options.
- Click on the Security tab.
- Click on the Custom Level button.
- Under Reset custom settings, select Medium-low from the dropdown list. Click Reset.
Note: For Windows XP SP2 users only - under Settings, scroll down to Java permissions and choose either High, Medium or Low safety (please do not have either Custom or Disable Java selected), click OK.
- Click on the Advanced tab and check the following:
- Scroll down to Browsing, ensure that Enable third-party browser extensions IS ticked and that Show friendly HTTP error messages is NOT ticked
- Scroll down to Java (Sun), ensure that Use JRE is ticked.
- Click OK.
- Quit/exit Internet Explorer after you change settings and then re-start the application.
