Social software enables large numbers of people to meet, communicate, share and collaborate through a website. The opportunities it offers for flexible and engaging social learning activities are making it increasingly popular in tertiary education.
Deakin supports social software applications including wikis and online discussions/blogs. These applications are relatively simple to use, but to manage the activities effectively requires time, knowledge and skill. It is important to select activities and assessment strategies that take advantage of the types of interaction social software can support but will not overload you with tedious hours of moderation and marking. See the pages linked below for more information.

Applications for non-DSO social software sites
Non-DSO sites are social software sites that can be accessed directly on the Internet via a unique web address, without logging into DSO. MediaWiki and Drupal-SMF sites can be created for university staff on request outside of DSO, by Knowledge Media Division (KMD).
If you would like a non-DSO site, first contact your Faculty teaching and learning teams for advice.
