Institute of Teaching and Learning

Professional Development for Teaching and Learning

The fundamentals of teaching and learning

Welcome to the Fundamentals of teaching and learning site.

The Institute facilitates a suite of professional development sessions aimed at enhancing the capability and capacity of academic staff to teach both face-to-face and online. These sessions are held at each Deakin campus just prior to, and at the beginning of each trimester.

The Fundamentals program occupies a position between the PD program for casual academics (PDCAS) and the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education (GCHE). With a 'fundamentals' focus, this program aims to develop broad based foundations for teaching and learning at Deakin University. It is based on research evidence of what constitutes 'effective' teaching and learning in  higher education settings.

However, the face to face sessions in the program have a definite practical emphasis, encouraging development of ideas capable of being applied in individual academics' differing contexts. The topic of each session acknowledges the complexity of teaching and learning, recognising the fact that an effective teacher needs to be aware of many aspects of his/her role, and of developing a range of skills and attributes.
