Teaching and learning essentials

The Teaching and learning essentials workshop within the Fundamentals of teaching and learning program covers a range of basic elements of teaching in higher education. It aims to lay the foundations for the development of academics as effective teachers at Deakin.

2. Adult learning principles
3. Planning for learning
4. Active learning
5. Presentation skills
6. Managing large and small classes
7. Questioning techniques and facilitating discussions

At the completion of this session participants should be able to:

• reflect on their own approach to teaching
• apply adult learning theory to their own teaching contexts
• plan for structure and strategies when preparing teaching sessions
• refect on the value of different means of presenting content in a teaching session
• explain a range of techniques for managing large classes
• apply some basic discussion facilitation techniques in their teaching sessions.

Format: face-to-face
Target audience: 'New to Deakin', inexperienced academics and sessional teachers
