Teaching in practical or laboratory settings

The Teaching in practical or laboratory settings module within the Professional Development for Casual Academic Staff (PDCAS) program is online and self paced that will help new teachers gain an understanding of the benefits to both them and their students of effective teaching in practical or laboratory settings. The module incorporates discussions of various aspects of conducting practical or laboratory classes at Deakin, and some activities that are designed to help participants reflect on their approach to teaching.

At the completion of this module participants should be able to:

• recognise the potential benefits of practical or laboratory teaching
• explain why practical classes are conducted
• identify the learning aims of practical or laboratory classes
• cite the attributes of good practical or laboratory teachers
• describe what preparation needs to be done before practical or laboratory classes
• appraise strategies for conducting practical or laboratory classes
• recognise the important role of marking practical or laboratory work
• consider legal, ethical, health and safety and special needs issues related to practical or laboratory teaching.
