Dr Yuncang Li Dr Yuncang Li - promoted to Level B Research Fellow
Dr Lu Sun Dr Lu Sun Dr Sun won the Smart Technology Award at the 2008 Researcher of the Year Awards for her work in Optimising the UV Protection of Textiles with Nano Zinc Oxide. Her research will lead to an improved understanding of the basic interactions between nano particles, colour and fibre. Lu Sun's project has been funded by the Australian Research Council and Micronisers P/L, under the supervision of Dr John Rippon, Dr Peter Cookson and Professor Xungai Wang.
Professor Qipeng Guo Professor Qipeng Guo - elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in the UK
Minoo Naebe PhD candidate Minoo Naebe - awarded a Young Nanotechnology Ambassador Award 2008. This award aims at promoting science and science education in schools by selected postgraduate student/ early career researchers. Minoo was also selected to attend the Asia Nanotech Camp, held in Feb this year in Japan. She was one of the only 3 PhD students throughout Australia selected to attend this event.
Alfred Deakin Professor Xungai Wang Alfred Deakin Professor Xungai Wang - elected to the ARC College of Experts for 3 years beginning in 2008.
Professor John Duncan Professor John Duncan - a regular visitor to Deakin University from New Zealand, has been awarded the Geoff Wilson Medal. “John has been an active member of our team, giving up his time over many years to help our research students gain more insight into metal Forming,” said Professor Peter Hodgson, the Director of the Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation, who made the presentation to Professor Duncan.
Technical Officer, Katrina Morgans - awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s professional development award this year to study Materialographic sample preparation
Dale Atwell - the recipient of the Marcus A Grossmann award for 2008. The Marcus A. Grossmann Young Author Award was established in 1960 in memory of an eminent metallurgist, research director and author, who was President of ASM in 1944, to honor the author(s) under 40 years of age (at the time of publication) whose paper has been selected as the best of those published in a specific volume of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions.
PhD student Yichao Wang - has been successful in securing a scholarship from ANSTO to attend SANS summer school in Korea. He is one of the only 5 awardees in Australia.

New ARC grants awarded to CMFI researchers -

  1. Protein Fibre Powders: Production, Characterisation and Applications (Discovery grant, $450 k)

  2. Formation and characterisation of continuous electrospun nanofibre yarns (Linkage grant, $300 k)

  1. Professor Xungai Wang, Dr Tong Lin and Dr Takuya Tsuzuki have been awarded $284,644 for a project entitled Value Adding to Australian Cashmere Fleece.
  2. Professor Peter Hodgson, Dr Bernie Rolfe and Dr Richard Yang have been awarded $225,000 for a project entitled Design Strategy for Cold Roll Formed Products
