Recent changes to the Deakin University Internet Access Solution

The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) is pleased to announce the deployment of the most significant changes to the Deakin University internet access solution seen in the past decade.

As part of this deployment, ITSD has also implemented changes to internet usage charges:

  • Students previously received a quota of 1.25Gb per trimester, this has now been lifted to 5Gb per trimester. When you are approaching your quota you will be notified, and your requirements assessed.
  • Students no longer need to pay for excess internet usage which negates the need to transfer money from your Deakin Card to your internet usage account.
  • Some commonly used web sites including Google, Microsoft and other Australian University web sites will be excluded from the quota, all adding up to provide you with access to more of what the internet has to offer.

The new internet access solution will offer a far more streamlined browsing, downloading and communicating experience, enabling functionality on applications not available previously.
  • Skype, Second Life, smart-phone applications (and more) will now be fully functional on the University network.
  • You will no longer be required to enter your username and password every time you want to access the internet.
  • You will no longer be required to enter the details for the proxy server every time you want to use the internet.
The changes detailed above are already in effect on the DeakinSecure wireless network, with the wired network on all Campuses being migrated across gradually over the coming months. These changes are clearly significant, with the internet access solution on offer at Deakin University becoming second to none in terms of access, ease and performance. We are sure you will enjoy these highly valuable changes.

The changes outlined above have removed much of the need for the information available on the Internet Usage System (IUS) web site. Accordingly, access to IUS has been removed with a rebuild currently underway to give you a much better view of your internet usage under the new solution. Stay tuned for this and other exciting developments for internet access at Deakin University.
