Internet access

This service provides Deakin University students and staff members, as well as approved external parties, with access to the internet as well as the appropriate areas of the organisation's intranet.

DeS test and recommend the use of the Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers.

DeS aims to achieve 99% availability of this service each calendar month.

Charges

The cost of using the internet is split across all University Faculties, Institutes and Other Areas according to previous usage information. Both student and staff use is included in this overall cost splitting, which means that students and staff aren't billed individually in any way.

Each student (undergraduate and postgraduate by coursework) is allocated a quota of 5 gigabytes per trimester. If this quota is exceeded their internet access will be slowed until the beginning of the following trimester unless they have negotiated with the IT Service Desk for a quota addition for legitimate study purposes.

While staff and postgraduate by research students are not allocated a specific quota, internet use will be monitored and those reaching a high volume of usage will be contacted to discuss individual needs.

External parties and events: Provision of internet access for the purposes of use by external parties and events will be quoted and charged for on an individual basis.
