The network management service delivers wireless, remote and wired network access to Deakin staff and students to allow access to internet services, network shares and Deakin's managed standard operating environment. The ITSD publications web site hosts a number of user guides and help sheets to assist customers to set up and use these services.
Deakin University has an extensive wireless network across the four campuses that allows students and staff to access technology services such as the internet and their saved work without being connected to a physical network point.
ITSD aims to achieve 99% availability of this service each calendar month.
Wireless network: ITSD is centrally funded to provide a number of wireless points as part of this service to Deakin University staff and students.
External parties and events: Provision of access to the internet for the purposes of use by external parties and events will be quoted and charged for on an individual basis.
There are a number of methods available to Deakin University staff and some student groups that allow access to the organisation's network from remote locations. These include:
The VPN is a service that is used at the same time as another method of accessing the network via the internet. By using the VPN, it is ensured that the user is viewed from a security perspective the same as if he/she was on campus. This allows access to most of the services that are accessible on campus.
Eduroam is a wireless service that allows Deakin students and staff to use wireless networks at cooperating universities in Australia and around the world, using their Deakin username and password to gain access to services including their Deakin email account and files saved on the Deakin network. Eduroam also allows visiting staff and students to use the Deakin wireless network to gain access to resources at their home institutions.
Deakin-in-a-box is a service that ITSD can provide that allows small groups of students or staff to connect to the Deakin network wirelessly from remote locations and work as though they are on a Deakin campus. This service is dependant on Telstra 3G access being available in the remote location. More information about this service can be obtained by contacting the IT Service Desk.
ITSD aims to achieve 99% availability of the VPN service each calendar month.
VPN: ITSD is centrally funded to provide this service to all Deakin University staff and students.
Eduroam: ITSD is centrally funded to provide this service to all Deakin University staff and students as well as staff and students visiting from cooperating Universities.
Deakin-in-a-box: A Deakin-in-a-box installation is charged back to the requesting University area at the amount of $4000 per unit as a one-off cost that covers provision of the technology as well as support for it for a period of three years.
External parties and events: Provision of any of the methods of remote access details above by external parties and events will be assessed, quoted and charged for on an individual basis.
This service provides network technology between and within each Deakin University campus to allow staff and students to connect to services such as their email and saved documents by plugging their workstation in to a physical cable.
ITSD aims to achieve 99.9% availability of this service per month.
Wired network access: ITSD is centrally funded to provide this service to all Deakin University staff and students.
New network points: These require the employment of external contractors and are charged at cost price.
External parties and events: Provision of access to the wired network for the purposes of use by external parties and events will be assessed, quoted and charged for on an individual basis.
