This service provides the ability for areas within the University to run their own server applications on a server maintained by DeS. DeS will maintain the hardware, operating system, security and backup capability while allowing control to be delegated to a designated owner/owners for administration, backup recovery and application management. This service is suitable for valid business purposes that require up to 50 people using the installed application at any one time. For business critical or larger scale implementations refer to the IT Service Desk for more appropriate services offered by DeS.
DeS house and manage a number of virtual servers and, on request, will setup a managed server for which authority can be delegated to appropriately knowledgeable users for administration.
This service is available for applications utilising currently supported versions of Microsoft Windows Server. Other operating systems will be considered with sufficient business justification – a customised service level agreement will apply. Please contact the IT Service Desk for further details.
For servers that are accessed only by University Staff, DeS will provide access to Oracle and SQL Server database environment.
DeS will backup to tape on a daily basis through the use of an agent application installed on each server.
DeS will perform routine patching of all servers running a server Standard Operating Environment on a bi-annual basis. Patches for critical vulnerabilities will be applied as required throughout the year as they become available. Patching will occur at defined windows during the week.
DeS will monitor the hardware and Standard Operating Environment to ensure availability. Monitoring of applications is available on request for running services.
DeS will inform the owner/owners of the servers if an application failure occurs on a managed server via email or phone to allow fault rectification to occur.
DeS aims to achieve 99% availability of this service each calendar month.
