CloudDeakin refresh

CloudDeakin is Deakin's cloud learning environment (formerly known as Deakin Studies Online). Every course should leave the sandpit with a CloudDeakin 'makeover'. This includes three things:

  1. course sites (that links students to key course level information)
  2. enhanced unit sites
  3. student Portfolios.

Deakin Learning Futures will work closely with teaching staff to understand their plans for CloudDeakin presence, and then provide advice and support in areas such as site and graphic design. Enhancements include a new colour palette, banner designs, individual widgets, multimedia tools and applications, restructuring course resources, and advice on how to maximise student engagement in curating learning achievement in portfolios. The CloudDeakin Refresh should normally be achievable within four weeks if staff respond and prepare according to plan.

Staff may also like to refer to the Open Access and Licensing (OPAL) information which provides guidance in using the rich array of resources available to refresh and revitalise courses and units.

Course sites

The course site is where students access course level information, such as course structure, clearly defined course learning outcomes and standards, access to integrated learning support in areas such as academic literacies, library and career development. The goal is to enable students to communicate with the course team and their peers, as well as connect with industry bodies and volunteering opportunities. Course level forums (in the cloud or on location) will enable students to connect.

Unit sites

As part of the refresh, unit sites will be taking on some of the visual characteristics of the particular course. This can occur through the use of colour coding, graphical imagery and a well-structured, consistent approach to how and where students will access their learning resources and experiences.

CloudDeakin Portfolios

Deakin promotes student responsibility for evidencing learning achievement. One way to do this is to encourage or require students to create and curate evidence of learning in a digital space such as a portfolio. CloudDeakin makes portfolios available for all Deakin students and staff (see the My Tools icon). Evidence of learning and reflections on learning - in formats such as documents, images, audio and presentations - can be kept in the CloudDeakin Portfolio, even beyond graduation. Students and graduates can share learning evidence with employers, peers and significant others as they wish.

A student Portfolio user guide  and a staff portfolio user guide are available.

Below are two examples of a refreshed CloudDeakin Portfolio - the first displaying artefacts, with the second showing an open assessment (artefact).
