This collection covers agriculture and related technologies; plant injuries, diseases, pests; field and plant crops; orchards, fruits, forestry; garden crops (horticulture), vegetables; animal husbandry; processing dairy and related products; insect culture; hunting, fishing, conservation and related technologies; and landscape architecture and design.

Purpose of the collection

The University does not teach agriculture as such, but collects in this area to support the teaching and research needs of the School of Life & Environmental Sciences and the School of Architecture & Building within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment. Resources in this area are also used to varying degrees by Schools in the Faculty of Arts and Education and the Faculty of Health.

Users/courses supported by the collection

  • The School of Architecture and Built Environment offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Architecture
  • The School of Life and Environmental Sciences major areas of study include Biological Science, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Environmental Management, Freshwater Biology and Management, Marine Biology, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, Forensic Science and Science
  • The collection also supports some courses within the Faculty of Arts and Education, with International Community Development studies being offered at postgraduate and research level.

Existing Collection

Major online databases such as Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts, the Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management group of databases, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Art and Architecture Complete, Applied Science & Technology Abstracts, SciVerse, Wiley Interscience, Web of Knowledge, Biological Abstracts and FSTA provide access to a comprehensive range of information. Specialised collections on commercial fishing and culture of fish and invertebrates exist at Warrnambool. Collections on conservation of biological resources are held at Melbourne and Warrnambool. A large collection of landscape architecture and design material is held at the Geelong Waterfront campus.
