Australian Multicultural Foundation Literature Collection (AMFLC)

Background

This collection was first established in 1990 as a consequence of a grant to Deakin University from the Australian Multicultural Foundation. This grant enabled the results of more than 15 years of research to be collated and published by Deakin University in 1992 as A Bibliography of Australian Multicultural Writers. The Library, in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts, developed an active acquisition program for all works listed in the bibliography, and for the continued expansion of the collection through the purchase and donation of new or previously published writings as they became available.

Since 2007, collection development is no longer active except for multicultural children's material.

Purpose

The collection aims to promote and highlight the diversity of Australian writing and writers, and the languages in which they write. It is intended to encourage teaching and research into writings of Australian authors from non-Anglo-Celtic backgrounds and increase community awareness of the significant literary contribution made by peoples from all cultures to the development of Australia.

Content

This Collection consists of works by:

  • Australian migrants, whose first language is not English
  • Children of migrant parents, whose first language is not English
  • Long-term visitors to Australia, whose first language is not English
The Collection includes a broad range of literature including novels, short fiction, poetry, drama, autobiography, biography, essays, literary criticism, memoirs, and selected literary non-fiction. The collection is primarily print.

Campus Location

The material is primarily located in the general collection at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. The following categories are located in the Multicultural Collection which is part of the Special Collections at the Geelong Waterfront Campus:

  • Rare material
  • Limited editions of 500 copies or less
  • Self-published works
  • Small press publications
  • Flimsy, pamphlet-type items
  • Items signed by the author
  • Costly items
  • Manuscripts

Collection Development

The collection is no longer actively developed except for multicultural children's material. If material is received that falls into the scope of this collection (eg. through the Australiana approval plan) it is still processed and added to the collection according to these guidelines.

Retention

One copy of each title should be retained in the Library collection. Duplicate copies of titles may be considered for de-selection if they no longer support the teaching curriculum of the University. Titles being considered for weeding should be checked on the Library catalogue for a form entry indicating they are part of the ALFMC.

Responsibility

The Associate University Librarian, Information Management & Access and the Manager, Faculty of Arts, Library Services.
