This collection covers general history; biography; history of the Ancient World and history of the Modern World.

Purpose of the collection

The Library collects in the field of History primarily to support the teaching and research needs of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences within the Faculty of Arts and Education. Resources in this area are also used to varying degrees by other Schools in the University.

Users/courses supported by the collection

School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers an undergraduate degree Bachelor of Arts, with a major sequence in History. Studies focus especially on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and cover different regions of the world – Australia, America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, as well as international history more generally.

Students who perform well in their undergraduate degree are encouraged to enrol in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours). This course is a pre-requisite for enrolment for Higher Degree by Research courses. Staff supervise honours and higher degree by research students in areas such as

  • Australian political history
  • The history of international relations and European colonialism
  • Migration history
  • American history
  • Women’s history
  • French history
  • The Holocaust
  • Pacific history
  • The history of anthropology
  • Southeast Asian history
  • The history of science

Staff and students in the Anthropology major sequence offered in the School also make extensive use of this material.

Existing Collection

Major online databases such as APA Full Text, Expanded Academic ASAP, Academic Search Complete, Humanities International Complete, JSTOR, Project Muse and ABC CLIO (which includes Historical Abstracts) provide access to a range of information.

The Western Victoria Collection which is housed in the Special Collection at the Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial Library comprises over 5,000 items including local histories, publications relating to business, cultural and sporting organisations, biographies, literature, annual, economic and developmental reports, and newspapers. Also included are journals and newsletters, pamphlets, maps, architectural drawings of Warrock homestead, oral history, videos, newspapers and the Wathaurung Territory series all relating to Western Victoria.

The Warrnambool Special Collection contains over 1,000 items relevant to the Warrnambool area.

Selection Notes
