Journalism and museum studies

This collection covers three broad groups. The first is generalities (the term used to cover knowledge and resources for knowledge in the general sense, often used as the basis of a reference collection and includes bibliographies – general, national and trade, general publications which include encyclopedias, serials, general organisations). This group also includes museology. The second is library and information science, and reading. Documentary media, educational media, news media, journalism, and publishing and is the third.

Purpose of the collection

The Library collects in the fields of Journalism and Media to support the teaching and research needs of the School of Communication and Creative Arts within the Faculty of Arts and Education. The Library collects in the field of museology to support the teaching and research needs of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences within the Faculty of Arts and Education.

The Library also collects in the broad areas of general reference and information to meet the needs of the staff and students of the University. A limited range of material is acquired on historical bibliography and publishing where this is relevant to teaching and research in various disciplines. A range of material in the area of librarianship is purchased to the extent necessary to enhance library services and operations.

Users/Courses Supported:

The general part of this division will be used by all students and staff of the University.

Within the Communication & Media area of the School of Communication and Creative Arts, the following disciplines are offered:

  • Journalism
  • Literary Studies
  • Media and Communication
  • Public Relations
  • Professional and Creative Writing

Postgraduate courses are available in Journalism, Media and Communication, Literary Studies, Professional Writing, Public Relations and Writing and Literature.

A postgraduate suite of Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies courses are available through the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The library sciences section supports Library staff in their work. Some items will be housed in the workroom areas, and not accessible to users without prior notification.

Existing Collection:

Major online databases such as Communication and Mass Media Complete, Expanded Academic ASAP, Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Emerald, Humanities International Complete, APA Full Text and ALISA: Australian Library and Information Science Abstracts provide access to a range of information.

Selection Notes:

Aspects of this collection are relevant at Melbourne, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Warrnambool and Waterfront campuses. Specific areas of interest are as follows:
