This collection covers social sciences; sociology; social interaction; social processes; factors affecting social behaviour; social groups; marriage & the family; communities; slavery & emancipation; social problems & services, association; social problems & social welfare in general; social welfare problems & services; other social problems & services; criminology; penal & related institutions; associations; general clubs; miscellaneous kinds of associations; child rearing & home care of the sick & infirm.

Purpose of the collection

The Library collects in the field of Sociology primarily to support the teaching and research needs of the School of History, Heritage & Society, and other Schools within the Faculty of Arts and Education. Resources in this area are also used by the Faculty of Health and to a lesser degree by the School of Life and Environmental Sciences within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment.

Users/Courses supported by the collection

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts, with major sequences in Anthroplogy, Sociology, Criminology, History and Australian Studies. The School also offers a Bachelor of Criminology,

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts, with major studies in International Relations, Politics and Policy Studies, Middle East Studies, Social and Political Thought.

Postgraduate and research degrees are available in a range of disciplines.

Existing Collection:

Major online databases such as Academic Search Complete, APA Full Text, Expanded Academic ASAP, SocIndex with Full Text, Project Muse, JSTOR and Humanities International Complete provide access to a range of information.

Selection notes:

Aspects of this collection are relevant at Melbourne, Geelong at Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool campuses; the Bachelor of Social Work is delivered at the Geelong Waterfront campus. Specific areas of interest are as follows:
