1. The University Librarian / Executive Director, Academic Support is responsible for administering the Library Conditions of Use and may delegate authority to administer them. (Library Operational Policy - available on The Guide: theguide.deakin.edu.au)
2. It is a condition of entry into the Library that Library staff may inspect all bags or other receptacles capable of containing Library materials and their contents.
3. If a person refuses such inspection of their bags or other receptacles, they may be refused entry or asked to leave the Library.
4. Library clients must not engage in behaviour that is likely to interfere with the comfort or convenience of other people within the Library, or that is likely to damage or result in the unauthorised use of Library facilities or materials.
5. Library spaces support quiet study, group work and student interaction. Quiet study areas are designated by signage, indicating that others should not be disrupted.
6. Only notices approved by the Library, including from other Divisions and Faculties of the University, may be displayed in the Library.
7. Library and Security staff may request that a person using the Library comply with these conditions or leave the Library.
8. Damage or defacement of Library materials is strictly forbidden and may incur a replacement charge. Cost of replacement is displayed on the Library website at: deakin.edu.au/library/access-borrow/problems.php
9. Library clients must observe special use restrictions which apply to any materials, including the Special Collection, items borrowed via Interlibrary Loan and through the BONUS+ network.
10. Library clients must comply with copyright requirements and must not copy, print, scan, download or record Library material in any manner which infringes the Copyright Act 1968 (Commonwealth).
11. Many electronic library resources subscribed to by the Library are only available to Deakin University staff and students. In some instances the Library has negotiated access for other Library clients e.g. MIBT, alumni.
13. All use of Deakin University Library electronic resources must be for educational, research or personal purposes. Information must not be used for commercial purposes or re-sold in any way. Copyright for electronic resources resides with the original author or publisher.
14. Systematic downloading of electronic library material is not permitted.
16. Equipment available for loan may only be borrowed in person by Deakin University staff and students for educational purposes.

18. When borrowing library materials, a current Deakin Card; Deakin University Library community borrower's card; or CAVAL card is required.
19. Alternatively a letter of offer from Deakin University or photo identification such as a driver’s license can be used.
21. The loss of a borrower's card must be reported to the Library immediately. The cardholder may be responsible for any items borrowed up until the time the Library has been notified of the card loss.

22. Most Library print material is available for loan. Materials in the following collections are an exception and may only be used within the Library:
In special circumstances, items in these collections may be borrowed by arrangement with Library staff.
23. Community borrowers may be restricted in the items that they may borrow, as some collections are only available for use by Deakin University staff and students. More information is available on the Library website at: deakin.edu.au/library/join/index.php
24. Material available for loan can be removed from the Library once the loan has been recorded.
25. The number of items that may be borrowed, and loan, renewal periods, and the location to which they may be returned varies for different categories of Library clients and type of Library materials. 26. It is the responsibility of the borrower to return all items in good condition and on time.
27. Items requested by another Library client may be recalled. There is a minimum loan period if an item is requested by another client. More information is available on the Library website at: deakin.edu.au/library/access-borrow/request-an-item.php
28. An item requested by another Library client should be returned by the due date to avoid incurring overdue points.
29. The Library sends notices by email. If an email address is not supplied, notices are sent by post.
30. Special borrowing privileges may be available in certain circumstances, for example for students or staff with a disability. Contact Library staff at deakin.edu.au/library/study/students-with-a-disability.php to discuss opportunities.
31. Most items can be renewed if not requested by another Library client. Information about renewing a loan is available on the Library website at: deakin.edu.au/library/access-borrow/renew-or-return.php

33. If an item is not returned by its due date you will accrue overdue points and will not be able to borrow other items unless the item is renewed or returned. 34. A Library client who accumulates more than the prescribed number of overdue points will not be allowed to borrow further items from the collection for a specified period of time even when overdue items are returned. Check the Library website for details of the suspension period at: deakin.edu.au/library/access-borrow/problems.php
35. The Library will issue an invoice for the replacement of items which are deemed ‘long overdue’, damaged, lost. Overdue items can no longer be renewed once an invoice has been generated. Costs for replacement are displayed on the Library website at: deakin.edu.au/library/access-borrow/problems.php
36. Once an invoice has been issued it must be paid within the time stipulated or other penalties may apply. Deakin University students may have a University encumbrance placed on their student record, and other clients such as community borrowers may have other financial legal options imposed. 37. Where a Library client has committed a breach of these Conditions of Use, Library staff may impose one or more of the following actions:
38. If in the opinion of the University Librarian / Executive Director, Academic Support the alleged breach of the Conditions of Use amounts to an offence under Regulation 4.1 (1) Student Discipline, the provisions set out in that regulation may be applied.
