  • general loans include books, DVDs, videos, and curriculum resource material
  • prescribed texts and other high use items may have short loan periods
  • BONUS+ loans are books requested from other libraries in the scheme

1 day and 2 hour loans are available to Deakin staff and students, but are not for delivery. Renewals are not available for these items either.

We can offer flexible loans for most Library items, just ask us.

**Please note that we are unable to send books belonging to other libraries overseas (this includes BONUS+ books).


What equipment can I borrow?

Digital equipment is available for loan. Brief instructions are supplied with each device.

  Digital cameras

Loan: 3 days + 1 renewal
Available at: Burwood, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool campuses


Loan: 2 hours or 1 day (dependent on campus)
Available at: all campuses


Loan: 2 hours
Available at: Burwood
Details: laptops cannot be reserved

  Locker keys

Loan: 1 day
Available at: Waurn Ponds

  • you can borrow a key from the service desk for lockers on Level 1
  • rent a locker on Level 2 which requires a $2 coin
  • your coin is refunded when the key is returned to the locker
  • Level 2 lockers are cleared each morning.

  Zoom Q3 HD recorders

Loan: 3 days + 1 renewal. Holds available
Available at: any campus to Deakin staff and students only

How do I borrow?

How do I borrow?

You can borrow items in person using the SelfCheck unit, or at the service desk. You will need to have your Deakin Card - contact Deakin Central for information.

  • use Library Search to find your item
  • The Status of the item eg. AVAILABLE at a campus location, INTERNET (online) or on loan (DUE xx/xx/xx) will be an indication of whether you will need to wait for your request to be filled
  • use the Request It tab to place a 'hold' on an item
  • you'll be prompted to log in with your Deakin username and password. Other Library members log in with your family name, Library ID and PIN
  • submit the request and select your preferred Pickup Location. Postal delivery is only available to Cloud (online) students, and Campus student only enrolled in online units. Allow for transit time between campuses (1- 3 days) or postal delivery time (3+ days dependent on your address)
  • you can check the status of your requests in My checkouts & holds.

If you need a copy of an article or chapter that's not online submit our copy request form. We'll email your request within 5 days.

You may be able to borrow from other libraries if we don't have what you're looking for.

View and renew your loans

You can renew all or selected items that you have on loan.

  • Select the item(s) you wish to renew
  • Click 'Renew Marked' or 'Renew All'

Note: An item will not renew if it has a hold on it. Instead, a red 'on hold' message will appear in the status column. To limit overdue points, please return this item as close to the due date as possible.

Items that can not be renewed include:

  • Items on hold
  • Reserve items (2 hour loans)
  • 1 day loan items
  • Equipment
  • Interlibrary loans.

Requesting (placing holds on) items

Use the 'Request it' button to place a hold on items that are on loan or not available at your local campus.

Log in with your Deakin username and password or family name, Library ID and PIN. Follow the prompts to complete your request.

Cancel your hold

You can choose to cancel a hold at any time.

  • Select the item(s) you wish to cancel
  • Click 'UPDATE LIST'.

View your reading history

Reading History is an option available in My checkouts & holds that allows you to see details for all of the items you borrow.

To opt in for this service, navigate to the 'Reading History' list in My checkouts & holds

Click 'Save Reading History'.

Note: Reading History will only record what you have borrowed since opting in for this service. It will not record e-books.

Disability services

Students registered with the Disability Resource Centre are eligible for additional library services, including 

Disability Liaison Officers can assist you with individual library support and eligibility for

  • postal delivery service
  • print disability services including digitisation of print unit materials.

Delivery service

Using the delivery service

You are eligible for our delivery service if you are a Cloud (online) student, or you are a Campus student only enrolled in online units. Students with a disability may also be eligible to use our delivery service.

  • Request items using Library Search and the Request It tab
  • Choose 'Postal Delivery' as your pickup location
  • Library staff will check the items out to you and post them to your delivery address
  • 1 day and 2 hour loans cannot be requested and will not be delivered
  • You'll be provided with a prepaid return postal bag if your delivery address is within Australia
  • If you're living overseas, return postage will be at your own expense, but you'll receive reimbursement for postal charges if you provide the Library with your post office receipts. Contact us for details
  • Some restrictions apply regarding items that can be sent overseas.

Staff delivery

Staff delivery by internal mail

Staff can collect requested items from their campus library or select delivery to their faculty office.

  • Request items you wish to borrow using Library Search
  • Choose 'Office Delivery' or your campus as your pickup location
  • The book will be sent by internal mail to your faculty address once it's checked out to you if you select 'Office Delivery'
  • You will get an email notification when your request is ready for pickup at the Library
  • 1 day and 2 hour loans can't be requested and will not be delivered
  • Delivery to alternate addresses can be negotiated.
