- About Deakin
DRO curates and preserves Deakin University’s Doctoral and Masters Theses in digital format. Deakin University’s theses are harvested by OATD, the Open Access and Thesis directory which has indexed over 600 Deakin theses. Theses are discoverable through other major databases and search engines such as Trove and Google Scholar.
Candidates are required to submit a digital copy of their thesis via the Examinations Office, Deakin Research and complete the Library’s Digital Thesis Copyright and Access form (PDF, 34KB). This form will determine, based on copyright ownership, third party copyright content and publishing options, whether access can be provided through DRO. When the thesis is submitted to DRO a CD will be placed in the Library’s physical collection.
The Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) Assessment Procedure outlines the steps when lodging the final thesis. Candidates have three options in relation to access to their thesis on DRO:
For Thesis by Publication, permissions should be obtained from the publisher at the time of negotiation of the publisher agreement and before publication. Journal articles or portions of an article may need to be removed if permission has not been obtained and a link to the published article may be included in the digital copy. DRO staff will assist in removing any copyright infringing material where necessary.
For further information on copyright, Open Access and applying a Creative Commons licence to a thesis, visit the Library’s OPAL web pages.
The Library has created and stored digital versions of all previously awarded theses for preservation purposes. If you would like to make a digital version of a thesis available online you can submit a file direct to DRO. To make a thesis publicly available complete the Digital Theses Copyright and Access form (PDF, 34KB). Please send the completed form to firstname.lastname@example.org.
A request to obtain a copy of a thesis can be made by an institution or an individual on a cost recovery basis using the thesis purchase request form (PDF, 66KB). The applicant will be required to make a copyright declaration for the purchase of a thesis which is for the purpose of research and study only, as permissible under Australian Copyright. Further information on obtaining a copy of a thesis is available from email@example.com.
