On Friday 21 December Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, announced that the Rudd Government will cease implementation of the Research Quality Framework (RQF).

On 26 February 2008, Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), announced the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative. ERA will replace the Research Quality Framework (RQF) which ceased on 21 December 2007.

On 4 June 2008 the Minister released the Excellence in Research for Australia Consultation Paper which provides details of the proposed approach, indicators, submission, evaluation, reporting and proposed cluster structure. The Consultation Paper sought feedback from the higher education sector and research community.
Deakin University is preparing for the ERA with the development of Deakin Research Online (DRO) which will contain the research output of Deakin University researchers.
