The circumstances of entry to a legal career are varied. It may
be the result of a family tradition, the desire to help others who may
need professional guidance, an ambition to be a leader in a local society,
a belief, often unfulfilled, that it will lead to both fame and fortune
or it may come from a chance encounter. In Mr. Ainsworth's case it
was the interview he had with the principal of the Gordon Technical College
at Geelong after he had completed Junior Technical School. With top
marks in carpentry he had marked out a future as a tradesman. He
was told it would be better for him to attend the local high school.
He did, achieved good marks, matriculated and then obtained a position
as a clerk in the court system, while studying law by correspondence.
After army service he was able to complete his law degree under a post
war scheme to help returned service men and women. He is of the generation
who experienced the effects of the 1930s depression, the threat to Australia
of Japanese invasion, and the change from an Anglo/Celtic population to
one of people from many parts of the world. Apart from work in the
courts his experience of life as a grandchild of a farmer, the son of a
police officer, and his technical and military training enabled him to
build up a wide-ranging legal practice.
