An engine needs oil to run smoothly.  Without sufficient lubrication an engine will operate roughly or seize.  The same principle applies to society.  The work of unpaid volunteers provides the lubrication.  Without it life would be rougher.  If we look around us we see many volunteers keeping that engine running; lifeguards on our beaches, mothers at school canteens, young men or women coaching junior sports teams, deliverers of meals on wheels to the elderly.

One group of unpaid volunteers not often recognised as such are local government councillors.  During Vautin Andrews' time no money was paid to councillors except, sometimes, a contribution towards expenses when serving as president of a shire or mayor of a city.  He gave 31 years of volunteer service for Geelong in that role apart from many years in other civic bodies.  The mystery is 'How did he have time to do all that volunteer work and still have time to build up a successful and busy legal practice?'
