Extract from Geelong Advertiser re funeral of Buckland, 1886

"Yesterday afternoon the body of the late S.V. Buckland, mayor of the borough of Newtown & Chilwell was buried at Eastern Cemetery.  The funeral was supposed to be of a strictly private nature but the cortege was fully 3/4 mile in length.  A special train from Melbourne conveyed to Geelong a very large number of personal friends of the deceased gentleman, all of whom joined in paying a tribute of respect to the memory of the late Mr. Buckland together with the councillors of the borough of which he was mayor, members of the various professions and a host of residents of Geelong and district.

The pallbearers at the grave were Messrs. Gates, J.H. Grey, A. Chirnside, T. Chirnside, T.L. Currie, Josiah Austin, A.C. Ibbotson and T.C. Harwood.  The remains were interred in a brick vault in Church of England portion of the cemetery, the service being conducted by Rev. F. Davis, incumbent of All Saints Church, Newtown.  W.B. King and Sons conducted the funeral ceremonies."
