The essential quality required in any legal practitioner is integrity, an ability to separate one's own interest from your client's interest.  S.V. Buckland demonstrated he had this quality when first elected Councillor of the Borough of Newtown and Chilwell, his firm Taylor Martyr and Buckland sent their final account as solicitors for the Borough.  The Borough engaged a rival practitioner T.C. Harwood.  He and his firm then acted for many years.

Buckland had been in Geelong for about 12 months when he signed Articles of Clerkship with Charles Sladen on 16/10/1849.  He was born in Sydney in 1831.  It seems likely that he was the first native born in Australia to commence a legal career in Geelong.  He set a good example for other lawyers to follow, serving his fellow citizens in his profession, in public bodies and as a Municipal Councillor.

His service on the Board of the Hospital Committee was followed by other solicitors for more than a hundred years.  Many have served as Municipal Councillors.
