When Pat Burke and another solicitor with Teutonic blood in his veins were
seeking a solution to a legal problem his companion summed up the difference
of approach. “ When
I am looking for a solution I start at the top of a mountain and crawl my way
down to the bottom thoroughly looking at all the bye ways and then crawl up
to top of the next peak finding the answer while you in your Irish ways leap
from
mountain top to mountain top ahead of me.”
The combination of an easy manner and a quick brain helped Patrick Burke in his voluntary contributions to the good of society as well as his legal practice.
His story also shows how one circumstance can play a part in life. The Commonwealth
Scholarship scheme for university students began operating in 1951. If
there had not been scholarships available immediately after he matriculated
he
would not have attended university, become a lawyer, nor met the girl who
became his
wife. It was his good luck in career and marriage to be awarded one of
the first Commonwealth scholarships.
