Joseph Crawcour was 14 when he arrived in Geelong in the 1850's.  He had been sent out by his London based father to see what commercial opportunities there were in the new colony.  After his report his parents and the rest of the family migrated and established financial and other commercial businesses at the sites of various gold rush towns.  One of the next generation in Geelong, Henry Isaac Crawcour became a lawyer and established a successful business.  Two of his sons Jack and Murray became lawyers as did their nieces and a nephew.

Life at Melbourne University Law School seemed to be idyllic with tutorials under the palm trees and invitations to the Dean's home for dinner and dancing.  Like others of his generation war interrupted his legal career with service in New Guinea.

Because Geelong was an early settlement many local land titles were held under the Old Law system.  Crown Grants had been made before the Torrens system of Title Certificates came into existence.  Jack Crawcour was an expert in this area of law derived from the feudal practice of Livery of Seisen.  He readily gave assistance to any other practitioner who wanted help.
