An ability to analyse a situation, that is, to be able to resolve it into simple elements, is a necessary quality for any lawyer.  Niel Davidson had that gift.  He used it in his attention to his clients' matters and in his voluntary work in education in Geelong.  Geelong College, the Gordon Institute of Technology, and Deakin University all benefited from his ability to sum up matters in discussion and to use his acuity of vision to suggest a course of action bringing future benefit.  He saw early that Deakin University would expand.  While on the interim 1974 Council he persuaded his reluctant colleagues to purchase an additional 140 acres to provide for future needs.  He served on Deakin Council until shortly before his death and was its first Deputy Chancellor.  Despite devoting many hours to assisting others by helping to give them the opportunity for good education he looked after his clients very well and was a devoted husband and father.
