In 1927 when Roy Dobson entered into Articles of Clerkship he was 18.
His father had to pay the firm allowing him Articles 300 guineas.
(330 pounds, enough to buy a fair quality house in Geelong.) His
father asked for and got his undertaking to repay him when qualified and
earning money. His pay during the 4 years was 10 shillings a week,
a total of 104 pounds. Under the Articles he was subject to a restriction
of trade prohibiting him from setting up as a solicitor in Geelong.
He honoured the undertaking to his father and obeyed the trade restriction
setting up practice originally in Melbourne and later in Ballarat.
Interviewed almost 70 years later he gave a detailed and engaging account
of his life as an articled clerk in "Solicitors Row" Yarra Street, Geelong.
