John Patrick McCabe Doyle (1869-1941) John Patrick McCabe Doyle opened for business in 1886. A hundred years later when I was looking for information about earlier Geelong lawyers I interviewed his son John L. McCabe Doyle who became the senior partner in the firm of Doyle&Kerr in Geelong after his father’s death.

It is not only show people who need a lucky break to set off their careers. J. P. McCabe Doyle had his when, shortly after beginning practice he appeared in the Ballarat Supreme Court to defend a man named Iles on a charge of murder. His advocacy resulted in his client’s acquittal and according to his son this gave a flying start to the practice.

J.P.McCabe Doyle’s many voluntary contributions to the betterment of Geelong are well covered in the obituary lodged in this collection. He certainly laid a strong foundation for his legal practice. The firm Doyle&Kerr, later changed to Doyle Considine, continued until 2004 and always with a direct descendant or relative as a principal.
