Until the 1940's, at least, many solicitors had qualified under a form of apprenticeship serving five years articles with an established solicitor and passing examinations prescribed at the time.  When articles of clerkship are signed the master agrees to instruct the clerk in the law and the clerk agrees to serve the master.  A premium, often of a substantial amount, was paid to the master.  Harry Fallaw's view of his experience under articles points to a weakness in this system.  Interviewing him just short of 70 years after entering articles he still held the opinion that he was subject to exploitation.  The premium was 300 pounds, his wage 15 shillings a week, and no instruction from any principal of the firm was given.  His view was that he had been used as a general clerk.  When he was qualified as a solicitor in 1930 his wage was less than the basic wage.  This was in the Depression and times would have been hard for his employer.

In fact, despite this start he was a good solicitor, well regarded, who contributed much to the cultural life of Geelong.
