When Garnet Fielding commenced to study Law at Melbourne University in early 1952 he was fortunate to be doing so when there was an atmosphere of excitement and confidence in the Law School. Professor Zelman Cowen and Professor David Derham had both been appointed the previous year. Both had served in the Australian armed forces during the Second World War, the Dean, Zelman Cowen in the Australian Navy and David Derham in the A.I.F. Both were young. Both had distinguished careers later, Cowen, Vice Chancellor of the University of Queensland and then Governor General of Australia, Derham, the founding Dean of the excellent Law school at Monash University and later Vice Chancellor of Melbourne University.
Their students had the opportunity to graduate not only with a good knowledge of legal principles but also with a high regard for the practice of law.
Garnet Fielding’s attention to his duties as a solicitor in practice and his concern to do his best for other members when he was Secretary of the Geelong Law Association are illustrative of the students who took advantage of that opportunity
