When one thinks of the horrors of the battlefronts in France in the
First World War it is difficult to see how the participants could return
to normal civil life. Neil Freeman was in the thick of the fighting.
He won his D.S.O. at the battle of Polygon Woods in 1917 (one of the "step
by step" battles in Flanders). In those battles Australia lost 17,000
men for an advance of 4,200 yards.
He did return to civil life, setting up his practice in Yarra Street,
Geelong. He served as a councillor of the City of Geelong and was
on the board of various local community organizations. Not surprisingly,
when he tried to enter Federal Parliament he stood as an independent.
