"Strive mightily but eat and drink together."

This has been the theme of lawyers since the days of the Inns of Court in England where those practising law not only competed against each other in court but shared accommodation with their opponents.  One requirement of admission to the Bar was proof that the applicant had eaten sufficient dinners with other members of the Inn.

The Melbourne "Argus" of 7/5/1853 records the establishment of a Law Society.  From the accounts of early solicitors in Geelong it is clear that the Geelong Law Association is well in excess of a hundred years old.  The Association looks after the interests of its members, provides education, and has social gatherings.  The formal opening of the Legal Year has provided an opportunity for members of the Association to meet and show their regard for the law as a necessary part of a democracy.
