In 1945 Geelong had a population of 41,000. It had taken almost ninety years to double its 1854 population of 20,000. By 1981 its population had more than tripled to 125,000. The end of the Second World War enabled servicemen to return from war duties. The Federal Government encouraged European migration to Australia.   Many who came had spent years in camps as refugees from their homelands.  With expansion of existing industries and new ones establised Geelong provided opportunities for employment.  As well as other supplies and services more lawyers were needed for the increased population.

Richard Annois, a partner in a long established legal firm and an active participant in voluntary public service to the people of Geelong has recorded his observations of this growth, the changes in legal practice and lawyers who met that need.

Included with this essay are photographs of some of the lawyers or of their offices, notes of an interview with W. J. Backhouse recording his comments about those who acted as court advocates and a tribute by P. F. Burke for his "Father-in-Law", John L. McCabe Doyle.
