Sometimes those who have an association with lawyers in the course of
their own occupation such as police officers, auctioneers, estate agents
and accountants see a career in the law as one their children should take
up. It may have been his father's employment as a law clerk which
led William Goddard to seek articles. The Geelong Advertiser of the
6th September reported he was admitted to legal practice on 4th September
1893, described him as being of W. & W. Higgins and that he was going
to remain with the firm. Later he established his own practice in
Geelong and Colac. He sold the Colac practice to another person of
Geelong origin, J.A.C. Firth. Like others seeking to get a foothold
in a town where there were already established firms his practice included
court work and property matters.
On his death at 48 years, J.A.C. Firth took over the practice William
Goddard had conducted in James Street, Geelong.
Alfred D. Goddard, William's father, born in London in 1847, died in
1930, aged 87.
