Geelong's first solicitor Henry Tyssen (1814-1842) set an example of
service to the community outside the practice of law for succeeding lawyers
to follow. He died within 12 months of his arrival but he had already
called a meeting and set in progress action to establish the first Anglican
church in the settlement. Since those early days lawyers have taken
part in community concerns. Ray Grills' interests and contributions
reflected his times. He assisted in organizations such as the Aboriginal
Advancement League and the Australian-Asian Association. When he
travelled on the trains in India with his wife and six children there was
usually the opportunity for a philosophical discussion including being
questioned as to why he had such a large family. At the same time
as these modern interests he had a connection with early Geelong.
His father had worked as a law clerk for W. & W. Higgins, a firm stretching
back to the 1850s and on the retirement of the last members of the Higgins
family he took over the practice.
